The Academy Awards started out with a great comedy bit by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, can we say WAY better than last year’s show? Good old American comedy, a safe move by the show producers but everyone loved it.

Best supporting actor was the first award up with Matt Damon, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Plummer, Stanley Tucci and Cristoph Waltz as the nominees. Cristoph Waltz from Inglorious Basterds won the award.

Best original song nominees presented by Amanda Seyfriend and Miley Cyrus were from Princess and the Frog, Nine, Crazy Heart, Paris 36 and Crazy Heart. Crazy Heart got the award as it also swept through winnings for the Emmy’s . The real buzz was a still around Avatar and The Hurt Locker which at this point in the show, Hurt Locker was 1-0.

Best Animated feature was an easy guess, with Up taking home the award.

Presenter Ben Stiller came out dressed like an Avatar, to present the award for Best Makeup. As he mentioned, ironically, Avatar wasn’t even nominated for this award. The Oscar went to Star Trek. Robin Williams presented the Best Supporting Actress nominees including Penelope Cruz, Vera Farmiga, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Anna Kendrik and Mo’nique. Vera and Anna are both from the same movie which is common for the Oscars. The winner was Mo’nique for her role in Precious: Based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire.

The moment finally came that all the tweens were waiting for, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart presented a tribute to horror films such as Jaws, Silence of the Lambs and Amnityville Horror.

Zac Efron and nominee Anna Kendrick presented for sound editing, another great set of presenters to entice teen watchers. The Hurt Locker won the award, putting it one ahead of Avatar. The duo also presented the award for Sound Mixing which also went to The Hurt Locker giving it a strong lead.

For cinematography; Avatar won, bringing the score 2-3 with The Hurt Locker.

The awards got bigger as the show continued with Up winning the Oscar for Best Original Score.

Visual Effects was presented by lookers Gerard Butler and Bradley Cooper. They announced that the award went to Avatar putting it at a tie with most won Oscars with The Hurt Locker.

The Hurt Locker and Avatar were up against each other once more for Film Editing and the winner was The Hurt Locker putting it in the lead with 4 wins so far.

Finally the time came for the really big awards, starting with Best Actor. The nominees included Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman and Jeremy Reener. Kate Winslet presented the award and she looked magnificent. The award went to Jeff Bridges for his performance in Crazy Heart.

Best Actress was up next with nominees Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe and Meryl Streep. Sean Penn got the pleasure of announcing this coveted award presenting it to the pre-show favorite Sandra Bullock. This is a big deal for her because she usually does lighter films such as romantic comedies and this may have been her one chance to get such a big honor.

With two awards left, Barbara Striesand took the stage to present the award for Best Director. She pointed out that if Kathryn Bigelow won she would be the first woman to win the award and that if Lee Daniels won he would be the first African American to do so. And history was indeed made because Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win best Director at the Academy Awards. This also brought The Hurt Locker to five wins over Avatar’s three.

Last but not least, Best Motion Picture was presented by Tom Hanks for nominees Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air. He quickly announced that the winner was The Hurt Locker. This film is truly the winner of the whole ceremony, coming in with six awards total.
